What IEOLCA Certified means
End-of-life doula work is a non-regulated, non-medical profession. There is no single government licensing body that certifies all end-of-life doulas.
The IEOLCA Certified End-of-Life Doula credential is an organizational professional certification. It shows that IEOLCA has reviewed your prior education and that you have met our competency, ethics, and scope requirements. As a non-medical professional credential, it does not provide medical licensure or authority outside the end-of-life doula scope of practice.

Caring for others has long been woven into my life, and that calling eventually led me to end-of-life doula and hospice volunteer training. I understand how much time, energy, and money learners invest in following this work.
My training involved a significant financial commitment, limited practical guidance, and fixed evening classes that made for very long days. I then discovered that pursuing professional certification would require another considerable investment of time and money.
That experience stayed with me. Alongside IEOLCA co-founder Perry Metheral, I helped create a more accessible way for previously trained doulas to deepen their skills, strengthen their confidence, and work toward a professional credential while honouring the education they have already completed.

The Bridge Pathway is for people who have completed an end-of-life doula or death doula training program involving at least 30 hours of structured instruction, guided coursework, or supervised practical learning and wish to earn the IEOLCA Certified End-of-Life Doula credential.
Yes. Those who complete all Bridge Pathway requirements receive the IEOLCA Certified End-of-Life Doula credential, a digital IEOLCA Certified End-of-Life Doula badge, and the same certification benefits and professional recognition available to graduates of IEOLCA's full End-of-Life Doula Training Program.
After submitting your application and completing the one-time $149 USD certification fee, you will receive immediate access to the 12 Competency Preparation Guides and certification requirements. You may begin right away and work at your own pace. We will contact you within 24 hours only if we need additional information or clarification about your previous training.
If any portion of your competency assessment or reflective case studies requires clarification or further development, we will provide specific feedback and invite you to revise and resubmit your response. There is no additional fee for review or resubmission. Certification is issued once all pathway requirements have been completed and the required competencies have been demonstrated.
The Bridge Pathway includes five downloadable, editable practice resources: a First Client Consultation and Fit Assessment, a Sample End-of-Life Doula Service Agreement, a Client Wishes, Comfort and End-of-Life Planning Worksheet, a Vigil Planning Guide, Form and Checklist, and a Community Resource and Referral Network Builder. They are designed to be adapted to your services, jurisdiction, and the needs of the people you support.
Potentially, yes. IEOLCA welcomes applications from internationally trained doulas. Training may be reviewed regardless of country or provider, although supporting documents or an English translation may be requested when needed.
Most participants can expect to spend approximately 10–15 hours completing the Bridge Pathway, depending on their pace, prior training, and the depth of their reflective responses. The pathway is self-paced, and access begins immediately after your application and payment are complete.
If we are unable to accept your prior training certificate for the Bridge Pathway, your $149 USD certification fee will be fully refunded.
The Bridge Pathway is not a substitute for foundational training. If you have not yet completed end-of-life doula or death doula training, please begin with IEOLCA's full Online Death Doula Training & Certification program.
